Quick Answer

If you plan to use your ottoman as an upholstered coffee table for trays, books or decor, your ottoman should match your sofa seat height.  If using your ottoman as a footrest or footstool, 2-5cm lower is perfect. For use as additional seating, opt for the industry standard seat height of 43-46cm

Extended Answer

Choosing the right height of ottoman is all about how you intend to use it in every day life. The length and width of your ottoman are largely determined by the space you have available; how tall an ottoman should be is rooted in comfort. A footrest, upholstered coffee table (our favourite!) and occasional set all have different requirements so understanding what. you’ll use your ottoman for is the first step to choosing the correct height.

Here are the key facts to consider:

Start with the ottoman’s use

Decide how you will use your new ottoman. Popular uses include as a footrest, as an upholstered coffee table, as a staging area for décor and as occasional seating. As we make every ottoman to order, you may like to also consider if you would benefit from using your ottoman as additional storage.

DESIGN TIP  Sitting on your sofa and piling books in a tower until it reaches a height that your legs are comfortable will give you a ‘stack’ of solid items to measure when specifying the perfect height for your ottoman or footstool.

Understand the parts of your ottoman

Our stylist’s and upholsterers have used their combined industry experience when designing our standard ottoman range. An ottoman is made of two parts – the padded top and the leg. Through years of making upholstered ottomans, we’ve found that a 15cm upholstered top creates balanced proportions across most designs. We then combine this with your chosen leg height to achieve the overall finished height.

EXAMPLE  A large ottoman will have a 15cm fabric part as standard. When combined with a 20cm leg selection the total finished height will be 35cm

Get your measurements right

Always remember to ensure you measure the height for your ottoman with any carpet or rugs in place where it will sit. If you’ve not yet had your carpets fitted – wait.  Our advice is that accuracy over speed is the way to go when determining your ottoman height.

However, it might be useful for you to know that all of our ottoman legs are easily interchangeable. It’s not the end of the world if you are a few centimetres out on the height because we can usually send a different height leg to you to solve the mishap.

SPECIFICATION TIP  If in doubt, tell us the height of your sofa seat. It is much easier for us to recommend a comfortable finished height and which leg to select to get you there, rather than guess. We’re here to help!

Expert Tip

If you’re replacing an existing ottoman or coffee table, don’t assume you need to have the same height just because you’ve previously lived with it that way. One of the benefits of ‘going bespoke’ and specifying a custom piece of luxury furniture is that you can solve little frustrations that you’ve become used to. Now is the perfect opportunity to create something exactly as you want it!
